AAOS Emergency Care and Transport of the Sick and Injured Practice Exam

The correct term for a state of overwhelming obsession or physical need to continue the use of a substance is addiction. Addiction is characterized by compulsive use despite harmful consequences and is often marked by physical and psychological dependence on the substance. In this state, individuals may prioritize substance use over important aspects of their lives, including relationships, responsibilities, and health.

When discussing dependency, while it is often related to addiction, it typically refers more specifically to the physical reliance on a substance, where the body experiences withdrawal symptoms in its absence. Substance abuse generally describes a pattern of harmful use of substances, which can lead to addiction but does not necessarily encompass the compulsive aspect of continuing use despite consequences. Withdrawal syndrome refers specifically to the symptoms experienced when a dependent person stops using a substance, rather than the overarching patterns of behavior associated with addiction. Therefore, addiction best encapsulates the concept of a compulsive need to continue substance use.
